    Plot Summary

    • The Cannon family are currently living in Cairo, Egypt. While mother Larissa (Laia Costa) works as a nurse, father Charlie (Jack Reynor) is a TV reporter, who has received a job offer to relocate the family to New York City! The couple have two children: Katie (Emily Mitchell) and Sebastian (Dean Allen Williams), with a third due soon. After a scuffle between the two, Charlie breaks up the fight and Katie goes out to play in the backyard. Suddenly, she is called over to a nearby fence where a familiar woman she knows as "The Magician" (Hayat Camille) gives her candy and performs some tricks. The woman then hands the girl a nectarine, when a bug pops out of it and enters her mouth, causing her to gag and pass out!Back in the house, Charlie finds a bunch of candy wrappers stuffed into Katie's dollhouse. When questioned about it, Sebastian tells that a woman Katie talks to through the fence gives them to her. When Charlie goes outside to inquire about this with Katie, he finds her gone, with part of the metal fence bent back!Charlie runs through the nearby streets and sees the woman rushing away with Katie in her arms! He gives chase but a sandstorm comes through the city, causing him to lose track of her.The parents report the kidnapping to local authorities, with the lead detective (Husam Chadat) calling on another named Dalia (May Calamawy) to translate the parent's story. Though the parents are distraught, the older detective suspects they may be responsible for the kidnapping.Eight years pass, and the Cannon family are living in Albuquerque, New Mexico, along with Larissa's mother, Carmen (Veronica Falcon). Even though Katie is still missing, her parents have preserved her bedroom, leaving Sebastian (Shylo Molina) to share his bedroom with the youngest daughter, Maude (Billie Roy).Back in Egypt, a mysterious plane crash kills the two pilots on-board, but an ancient coffin is found in the wreckage. Thinking it is a stolen antiquities case, the coffin is sent to a team of archaeologists who open it up and find a mummified female. However, they are shocked when the figure opens its mouth and starts shrieking and flailing!Shortly after the discovery, Charlie and Larissa receive a call from the US Embassy in Cairo that Katie (Natalie May) has been found! Going to see her in the hospital, a doctor informs them that she is emaciated and suffering from trauma. While her vital signs are healthy, her body spasms and she seems only able to make guttural sounds. At the hospital, Dalia has come to see Katie. She claims she is intent on finding out what happened to her, and Charlie holds her to that.Katie's parents feel that being with her family will help her recover, and she is brought back to New Mexico and placed in her bedroom. However, things take a surprising turn when during a prayer by her grandmother, Katie headbutts the old woman, drawing blood. Soon after, she escapes through a little door in her room and scurries about inside the walls. Once she is back in her room, Charlie puts locks on the little doors throughout the house.Naturally, Sebastian and Maude are disturbed at the sight of their older sister, though their father cautions them not to talk about Katie until she is better. The children are also disturbed by a pack of coyotes that howl in the evening, and pass around the perimeter of the home.Charlie and Larissa are also soon at odds with each other, dredging up their feelings about who is to blame for what happened to Katie. While Larissa claims Charlie blames himself, he makes her feel worse by asking how she spent so much time at home, and didn't know about the woman Katie was talking to through the backyard fence.Larissa becomes intent on proving she can heal her daughter, but as she and her mother attempt to clean up Katie, an attempt to cut her toenails causes a large piece of flesh to come off!As Charlie examines it, he finds that there are multiple layers with writing. Looking at pictures of the wrappings that held Katie and seeing numerous characters on them too, he seeks out an archaeology professor at Albuquerque Community College. After reviewing pictures, the professor explains that the text is a way to keep an ancient spirit name the Nazarenian at bay. While spending time with Katie in her bedroom, Charlie hears her clicking her teeth together. He soon determines that she is trying to communicate to him through Morse code, and using a decoder from when she was younger, finds her clicking out the name "Layla."Charlie calls Dalia, but she claims she needs more information as Layla is a very common name in Egypt. When she asks if the kidnapper might have sent the family any correspondence, Charlie goes to the basement and opens a large trunk which contains numerous sympathy cards from when Katie went missing. Many of the cards were not opened and Charlie goes through each of them. One with an Egyptian return address has a handwritten card inside, with a candy wrapper drawing similar to the wrappers Charlie found Katie had been hiding. The sympathy message also has a name attached: Layla Khalil.Searching through records, Dalia finds the name associated with a woman whose family owns a nectarine farm. This jogs her memory, as a nectarine was collected as evidence at the crime scene.Going out to the farm, Dalia finds it deserted, albeit with signs nearby pleading to not flood the valley area. Going inside, she soon locates pyramidal ruins through a secret door under the house, along with an area where it appears a large coffin had been stored.Returning up top, she finds someone has returned. When Dalia demands the person come out, a woman with a knife charges at her, causing the detective to shoot and the woman to fall to the floor. As Dalia exits the home, she sees a woman wearing a hijab approaching. She demands the figure stop, but the woman takes off running! Dalia finds her at the edge of a cliff digging in the dirt. She threatens to fire, and the woman surrenders, handing over a metal tin. Inside is a video cassette with "Katie" written on it.Back at headquarters, Dalia identifies the woman in the hijab as Layla. She attempts to question the woman, only to find out that her mother (whom Dalia shot) has had her tongue cut off! She communicates that this was after she tried to tell someone before, and then writes out a confession, detailing to the detective what happened to Katie, and what the family has been doing.Meanwhile, the demon-possessed Katie begins to torment her family. She can now speak some words, and possesses Maude to curse out her teacher, sending Charlie and Sebastian to take her home from school.Meanwhile, Carmen attempts to pray over Katie, only to have the girl levitate off the floor, and send the old woman crashing through the nearby window and onto the hood of Charlie's vehicle just as they return!Charlie attempts to help his mother-in-law, but not before the pack of wolves appear and devour the still-alive Carmen!Following this event, additional locks are placed on Katie's door as a wake is held in the house for Carmen.During this time, Katie causes more chaos, making Maude pull out her own teeth and put in Carmen's dentures. She also torments Sebastian, speaking to him through his mind and eventually taking him over too.Katie has also been secreting a corrosive bile under her room's rug that allows her to break through the floor to the downstairs area. Once out, she jumps into the coffin and bites into Carmen's neck, drinking the embalming fluid inside the woman!Following the happenings in the house, those attending the wake are quickly ushered out, Katie is returned to her room, and both parents now feel helpless at the strange happenings going on with Katie.Later on that evening, Dalia shows up at the door with the recovered video cassette. The tape reveals Layla's mother, telling how their family has conducted this ritual 82 times over the years. It is found that a younger host will allow the demon to live longer in the host body before a new one is needed.Katie's parents watch the tape in horror as their daughter pleads and begs to be let go, but the woman and others in the room just chant an incantation. Suddenly, a stream of dark bile passes from the mouth of an old man in the coffin to Katie, and she grows silent. The video then shows the family wrapping her in special bindings before having her sealed in the coffin.Dalia also claims that Layla informed her that her brothers were the ones transporting the coffin, as the valley was going to be flooded. Plus, the bindings and the sealed coffin were the main things keeping the demon Nazarenian from escaping.Upstairs, Katie possesses Sebastian to come to her, and help her remove some more bindings on her body. Lights begin to flicker, and Katie begins to use her siblings to tormented her family!Larissa rushes to her daughter's room as a sandstorm rages outside the house. Dalia is attacked by Carmen's possessed body, and a scorpion that crawls down her throat and punctures it from the inside! She manages to get it out as Charlie rushes into Katie's room and holds her tight in a bear-hug as she writhes and struggles. Looking at Dalia as she comes into the room, his expression tells her what he has planned, and she understands.Holding several fingers over her punctured throat, Dalia speaks the incantation she heard on the tape. Like on the tape, a torrent of a black substance flies out of Katie's mouth and into Charlie's. Once it is over, the phenomena in the house ceases, and Katie speaks to her Mom.A following scene shows that Charlie has been locked away inside the chest that contained the sympathy letters. Katie has recovered, playing with her siblings and communicating to Charlie through the chest via Morse code. However, Larissa misses their family as a whole. Soon after, she calls up Dalia. We see that Layla's mother survived the shooting, and is in a hospital bed. When a nurse enters, she stabs the woman with a syringe, paralyzing her. It is then revealed that the nurse is Larissa.Dalia then enters, wheeling in Charlie who is still possessed by the demon. Dalia closes the door, and begins to chant the transference incantation, meaning to send the demon from Charlie to the horrified woman!
