Willem Dafoe plays an Aristotle Onassis-like tycoon. He stars as Marcos Timoleon, a wealthy industrialist throwing a lavish, decadent 1970s birthday party for his daughter and sole heiress, Sofia, on his exclusive private island — a premise loosely inspired by Greek shipping-magnate culture.

It carries an unusually long list of executive producers. The financing structure was so internationally complex that the credits include over 20 executive producers, ranging from Italian jeweler Ginevra Bulgari and actor Shane West to Egyptian producer Mohamed Hefzy and Belgian financiers.

European public film funds covered much of the budget. The production received direct financing from the Greek Film Centre, the Netherlands Film Fund, the BFI's Global Screen Fund, ICEC, and Greece's ERT public broadcaster — making it a patchwork of state-backed cultural investment rather than a traditional studio picture
