    Plot Summary

    • A Jack Russell terrier named Max (Louis C.K.) luxuriously lives with his owner Katie (Ellie Kemper) in Manhattan, hanging out with a fat and apathetic gray tabby cat Chloe (Lake Bell), hyperactive pug Mel (Bobby Moynihan), a laid-back miniature dachshund Buddy (Hannibal Buress), and a green and yellow budgie parakeet Sweet Pea (Tara Strong).Max believes that Katie would do anything for him, and he considers himself to be her protector. Katie adopted Max when she found him in a wooden box, abandoned on the streets and they have been together since then. Max meets his friends after Katie leaves for work. Gidet is a white Pomeranian who has a crush on Max and lives in the same building as Max.One day, Katie adopts Duke (Eric Stonestreet), a large and shaggy Newfoundland mix dog from the pound, leaving Max jealous because of her larger focus on Duke. Katie tells Max that Duke did not have a home either. Duke is very friendly in front of Katie, but when Katie is gone, he tries to muscle into Max's space. He starts by sleeping in Max's couch. Max cannot sleep the entire night, due to Duke's snoring. Max complains to Katie, but she cannot understand anything, and Duke realizes that Max is trying to get rid of him. Duke threatens Max that if only one of them can stay in the apartment, then it will be Duke. Duke eats Max's lunch as well. Duke only comes under control when he accidentally breaks a vase and Max knows that Katie will be livid with that.Enraged by Max's attitude towards him, Duke tries to abandon Max in an alley when they are taken for their daily walk by the dog walker (and left to play in the park), but they end up getting attacked by a feral cat gang led by Sphynx cat Ozone (Steve Coogan). The cats remove Max and Duke's collars, and the dogs are caught by Animal Control. Duke fears that he will be put down if he goes back to the pound. The Animal Control van drives the captured dogs to the pound. They are rescued by a rabbit named Snowball (Kevin Hart), the leader of "The Flushed Pets", a cult who hates humans because its members were abandoned and mistreated by them. The Flushed Pets attack the van and its human guards and free the captured animals. The gang includes a slow-witted tattooed pig named Tattoo (Michael Beattie) and they plan to start a revolution against the humans. After Max and Duke pretend to despise humans as much as they do by saying they "killed" their owners, the Flushed Pets invite them to join. To prove their loyalty, they must agree to be bitten by a one-fanged viper. Right before it happens, Snowball learns from the cats from the alley that Max and Duke are domesticated. With their cover blown, Max and Duke escape the drains and board a ferry to Brooklyn, inadvertently killing the viper in the process. Snowball vows to kill them and sets off.Gidget (Jenny Slate) discovers that Max is missing and travels to the roof of the apartment building to understand the true size of Manhattan. She finds and recruits a vicious red-tailed hawk, Tiberius (Albert Brooks), who was locked in his cage, to locate him. After looking over the city for Max, Tiberius returns to Gidget with Ozone, who directs Gidget and Tiberius to the sewers after being forced to by Gidget. Gidget and Tiberius then recruit Mel, Buddy, Chloe, guinea pig Norman (Chris Renaud), and Sweet Pea as they trek across Manhattan in search of Max and Duke, led by the elderly, paralyzed basset hound Pops (Dana Carvey). The group encounters Snowball, who vows to kill them, too. Most of the rescue group escapes but Norman is captured.Max and Duke begin to get along with each other. They raid a sausage factory after getting hungry. Duke tells Max about his elderly previous owner Fred. He adopted Duke as a puppy and raised him adoringly in Brooklyn, but Duke got lost chasing a butterfly one day and was taken by Animal Control, but Fred never came looking for him. Although Duke isn't sure if Fred will reconcile with him, Max convinces him that Fred will and convinces Duke to find him. They arrive at his house but learn from a resident cat named Reginald that Fred has died. Resentful and angst-ridden, Duke accuses Max of attempting to get rid of him. Heartbroken, Duke accuses Max of attempting to get rid of him and barks at the new homeowners who have just returned to the house and called Animal Control. The handlers catch Max, but Duke interferes long enough for Max to escape and ends up being captured instead. While plotting to rescue Duke as he follows the Animal Control van, Max is attacked by Snowball and his comrades. However, Snowball's gang are captured, and Snowball decides to ally with Max to rescue them. They drive and crash a city bus into the van on the Brooklyn Bridge, stopping traffic. The Flushed Pets appear and, unaware of Max and Snowball's alliance, corner Max, but Gidget and her team save him. The van rolls away; the captured Flushed Pets escape, but the van dives in the East River with Max and Duke inside. Max tries to retrieve the keys, but they float away. Snowball jumps off the bridge and brings Max the spare keys. Max rescues Duke and they make it out before the van sinks. The entire group return to the apartment by taxi. Max expresses his appreciation and infatuation toward Gidget, who returns with affection. Snowball and the Flushed Pets then come up with a new plan to annihilate all humans, but Snowball is then adopted by a little girl named Molly (Kiely Renaud). At first, Snowball resists, but gives in to her sweetness and lets himself be adopted by her. The remaining Flushed Pets return to the sewers. The other pets return and embrace their owners, and Max and Duke finally reunite with Katie, sparking a true friendship.

    Storyline

    • In a Manhattan apartment building, Max's life as a favorite pet is turned upside-down, when his owner brings home sloppy mongrel Duke. But, suddenly, Katie ruins everything by bringing home Duke: a giant, furry, and sloppy stray dog. And just like that, the fine balance of life is ruined in an instant, as both dogs lose their collars, and end up in the sewers--the kingdom of Snowball: a spotless, fluffy, magician bunny, and his army of flushed pets. Now, Max and Duke must set their differences aside to survive the harsh city life, as Max's friend, Gidget, assembles a posse of old companions determined to save the two strays, and bring them back home. Will they find them in time? — Nick Riganas A Jack Russell Terrier named Max lives with his owner Katie in a Manhattan apartment. Enraged by Max's attitude towards him, Duke tries to abandon Max in an alley, but they are both attacked by cats led by Sphynx cat Ozone who removes both dogs' collars and leaves them to be caught by Animal Control. Duke fears that he will be killed if he goes back to the pound. When Gidget, a white Pomeranian who is (not so) secretly in love with Max, discovers that he is missing, she decides to find him. 1 more All
