Plot Summary

• In 1971 Pakistan started a genocide of natives in East Pakistan. As a result, millions of refugees poured into India. Talks failed to resolve the issue and India started to train the local resistance units called the Mukti Bahini. This raised tensions between India and Pakistan. Pakistan attacked India from the western front. Many battles were fought on land, in the air and on the seas.During the India-Pakistan war of 1971 an Indian Army battalion is deployed at the outpost of Manawar Tawi along the western frontier in J&K where a huge build-up of enemy forces can be seen across the border. The enemy is estimated to have an infantry division and an armored division. If the enemy crosses Manawar Tawi, they will soon reach Srinagar.The battalion is commanded by Lieutenant Colonel Fateh Singh Kaler (Sunny Deol), a seasoned and disciplined officer who prioritizes the welfare of his men. Fateh's CO is Brig. Gurbachan Singh Cheema (Sanjiv Chopra). Fateh and his men had stopped a group of spies from Pakistan who were in India trying to map the Armies formations and bases, and from the maps they learned the enemy's plans. Fateh's 2nd in command is Gurjeet (Harwinder Aujla) and 3rd in command is Ajit (Pranav Vashisht).The Pakistani army is led by Gen Yahya Khan (Madhur Arora). Air Marshal Zafar Ahmad Chaudhry (Ajay Mehra) is in charge of the Air Force. Navy is led by Vice Admiral Muzaffar Hassan (Karan Chibber).In another unit is Major Hoshiar Singh Dahiya (Varun Dhawan), Indian Army officer from 3 Grenadiers. Hoshiar has troops Sub. Nishan Singh (Paramvir Cheema), Sub. Santram (Vansh Bhardwa), Balram Singh (Azad Chauhan), and Beniram Rao (Bhushan Vikas).Air Force base at Srinagar is manned by Fg Offr Nirmal Jit Singh Sekhon (Diljit Dosanjh), an Indian Air Force officer from No. 18 Squadron. The base only had 6 operational fighters. Fg Offr Baldhir Singh Ghumman (Tejashwar Singh) is Nirmal's wing-man. Lt Cdr Mahendra Singh Rawat (Ahan Shetty) is an Indian Navy officer from 14th Frigate Squadron.Cut off from reliable communication and distant from reinforcements, the soldiers face harsh conditions while preparing for an imminent enemy offensive. The story opens with glimpses of daily life including letters from home, friendly camaraderie, and quiet moments, establishing the bond among the troops.Hoshiar graduated from the National War Academy with Nirmal and Mahendra in 1961. Hoshiar and Nirmal had professional rivalry and Mahendra was always caught in the middle. Their CO was Fateh. Fateh was married to Simi (Mona Singh) and had a son Angad Singh Kaler (Guneet Sandhu). Angad was admitted to the army but was afraid to tell Simi. Angad tells Simi that he wants to be a proud Fauji like his dad.Nirmal has father Flt Lt Tarlochan Singh Sekhon (Hardip Gill), mother Harbans Kaur Sekhon (Neeta Mohindra) and sister Sukhminder (Ishika Gagneja). Nirmal finds that Hoshiar has no family. He shares his sister's Rakhi with Hoshiar and 2 become best friends along with Mahendra.Hoshiar is married to Dhanwanti Dahiya (Medha Rana). They were married when they were 7 and Hoshiar had not even seen her since. Hoshiar writes her a letter which causes her father and uncle to arrive at the academy and ask Hoshiar to take possession of his wife. Hoshiar brings Dhanwanti to his ancestral home in the village. Years pass as Dhanwanti gets pregnant.Mahendra is married to Sudha (Anya Singh). Hoshiar and Mahendra team up to get Nirmal to meet a girl Manjit (Sonam Bajwa) whom his mother had chosen for marriage. Nirmal was refusing to meet the girl, but Hoshiar tells Nirmal that the girl had rejected him. This piqued Nirmal as he did not like to lose. Nirmal reaches Manjit's house to find that she never rejected him. Nirmal gets married to Manjit.The day after Nirmal's wedding, all leaves are canceled and all soldiers and officers are recalled to their respective units.On 3rd December, 1971, 2 Pakistani jets cross over into India and attack Srinagar air base, Mahendra's ship at sea and Hoshiar's unit.Fateh finds that the Pakistani army had already occupied the vital bridge at Manawar Tawi. Fateh leads his battalion in a daring raid to recapture the bridge. Fateh gets call on the wireless from a Pakistani commander on the wireless who reminds him that his son Angad was killed in the same sector in the war of 1965.Fateh flashbacks to 1st Sep 1965 when he got the news of his son's death in battle. Fateh and Simi were at the Gurudwara when Angad called from the base hospital to speak to his father. Since then, Fateh stopped going to the Gurudwara. In Oct 1971, Fathen leaves for the border to prepare for war.Hoshiar's unit receives mail. Someone learns that he became a father, while someone lost a mother while they were away from home.Yahya khan dispatches his formations in army, navy and air force to attack India on the western front. Mahendra's ship is stuck by 2 torpedoes. The ship is badly damaged, and the captain orders his crew to abandon ship.The Indian Air Force planes led by Nirmal intercepts hostile aircraft that crossed the border headed to Srinagar. Nirmal engages 4 enemy aircraft in a dogfight and manages to shoot them down. Nirmal is fatally injured by enemy bullets and dies inside his plane.Mahendra refuses to abandon ship and fires 3 torpedoes at the enemy sub, damaging their ballast tanks and forcing them to surface. The submarine fires another torpedo at the ship, badly injuring Mahendra. The submarine commander then opens fire on the survivors from the ship. Mahendra regains consciousness and launches depth charges at the submarine, destroying it completely. Mahendra goes down with his ship.Among Fateh's subordinates is the young officer Hoshiar eager to prove himself, whose zeal contrasts with the Colonel's experience, creating both tension and mutual respect during the academy days. Intelligence reports indicate a large-scale enemy attack designed to breach the border, and the battalion is ordered to hold its position at all costs, as their post guards a strategically vital route to Jammu and the lifeline to Kashmir.Hoshiar and his unit are assigned to protect and defend a 2nd infiltration route called Jarpal in Shakargarh sector, parallel to Manawar Tawi. Jarpal is in Pakistan and the enemy had tank regiment support. The assault begins on 15th December 1971.Hoshiar leads the charge on the enemy positions and incurs heavy casualties as the unit had to run through open ground to reach the enemy trenches. Hoshiar takes out 2 MMG fortifications which had killed many Indian soldiers.Hoshiar undertakes a hazardous mission to destroy enemy artillery, solidifying his transformation into a battle-hardened officer. The enemy launches a surprise flanking attack with tanks that threatens to encircle the battalion. A soldier previously presumed dead infiltrates the enemy camp and sabotages their communications and ammunition, buying crucial time. Before dawn, the enemy launches a coordinated assault with artillery, tanks, and air strikes at Manawar Tawi. The battalion fortifies trenches and sand dunes, employing defensive tactics, guerrilla maneuvers, and improvised strategies to resist the superior force. Soldiers engage in close-quarters combat, transport ammunition under fire, and rescue the wounded.As casualties mount and supplies dwindle, morale falters, but Colonel Fateh rallies his men, emphasizing the importance of their defense in buying time for reinforcements. Night raids, ambushes, and sabotage missions showcase the soldiers' ingenuity and courage. Fateh destroys enemy tanks to secure a decisive victory at Manawar Tawi.Fateh gets word that the remaining tanks are headed to Jarpal. Fateh reaches Jarpal in time just as Hoshiar and his unit were on the verge of defeat against the enemy. Colonel Fateh leads a final counteroffensive at dawn, combining his remaining forces with reinforcements. Tanks clash, infantry fight in close quarters, and fighter jets provide air support. Fateh destroys enemy tanks with hand grenades, and he personally confronts the enemy commander, securing a decisive victory.After the battle, the survivors honor their fallen comrades. Belongings are collected, letters are sent home, and the young lieutenant, now matured by experience, salutes those who did not survive. Colonel Fateh reflects on the sacrifices endured before rejoining his men. The film concludes with a tribute to the courage, unity, and selflessness of soldiers who fight not for personal glory but for their comrades and the defense of their homeland.

Storyline

• Tensions arising between West Pakistan and East Pakistan and many migrants crossing the border to enter India.Looking at the situation the Indian government decides to interfere and support Bengali Independence movement leading to air strikes by Pakistan on several Indian airbases. The Indian army, though not in a great position and shortage of manpower declares war against Pakistan.Major Fateh Singh Kaler leading the Sikh regiment and Hosihar Singh 3 Grenadiers,Air force lead by Nirmal Singh Sekhon and Navy by Mahendra Sngh Rawat.A decade before the three youngsters Hoshiar Singh,Nirmal Singh and Mahendra Singh were trained under strict Fateh Singh.
