Plot Summary

• 36 years after the events of the first film, Lydia Deetz hosts the supernatural talk show 'Ghost House'. While filming a segment for her show, Lydia has visions of Beetleguese in the audience. Later, Lydia's stepmother informs her that her father, Charles, died in a shark attack. They pick up Lydia's daughter, Astrid, from boarding school before traveling to Winter River, Connecticut for Charles' funeral. Lydia and Astrid have been estranged since Astrid's father, Richard, died in the Amazon two years prior.At the wake, Rory, Lydia's boyfriend and producer, pressures her to marry him on Halloween, to which she hesitantly agrees. Meanwhile, Astrid meets a local boy named Jeremy Frazier, who invites her to spend Halloween with him.Meanwhile, in the Netherworld, Betelgeuse, still obsessed with Lydia, oversees an office of bio-exorcists consisting of shrunken-headed employees. Former actor-turned-afterlife-detective Wolf Jackson informs Betelgeuse that his ex-wife, Delores LaFerve, has resurfaced and gone on a murderous spree, draining the souls of the dead while searching for him. The couple met during the Black Plague in Italy, when Delores married and then poisoned Betelgeuse as part of an immortality ritual. He murdered her before succumbing to the poison.On Halloween, Astrid discovers that Jeremy is a ghost. He asks her to travel to the Netherworld with him to help him regain his life. In exchange, he'll help her meet her father's spirit. Astrid recites an incantation from the handbook of the Recently Deceased and the pair transport to the afterlife. Lydia, however, discovers who Jeremy really was. A local realtor informs her that Jeremy murdered his parents 23 years ago and died when confronted by police. Knowing Astrid is in danger, Lydia reluctantly summons Beetleguese to get her back. He agrees to help on the condition that she marry him so he can transition to the world of the living and escape the threat of his ex-wife.Betelgeuse blows open a portal to the Netherworld and disguises his lead employee, the anxious Bob, as himself to use as a decoy. Wolf discovers Betelgeuse has brought a living person into the Netherworld and launches a manhunt for him, capturing the disguised Bob. Delores, in her search for Betelgeuse, makes her way to the police station, finds Bob there, and drains his soul.Jeremy leads Astrid toward a train station that leads to The Great Beyond where he intends to board her on the Soul Train and exchange her life for his. Astrid's father, Richard, spots the pair and he and Lydia with Beetleguese stop her just in time. They are all then transported through an emergency exit to Saturn's moon, Triton, where they encounter a sandworm. Richard saves them before showing Lydia and Astrid how to return to the world of the living. Jeremy attempts to follow, but is sent into damnation by Beetleguese.Meanwhile, during a mourning ceremony for Charles, Delia is bitten by a pair of asps that she was assured were defanged. She arrives in the Netherworld and summons Betelgeuse to help her find Charles. He agrees in exchange for help finding Lydia.Back in the world of the living, Lydia and Astrid make up before heading to the church where Lydia is scheduled to marry Rory. Betelgeuse, guided by Delia, crashes the ceremony and injects Rory with a truth serum, forcing him to admit that he only wants to marry Lydia for her money. An angry Lydia punches Rory, knocking him unconscious as Beetleguese steps to the altar, reminding Lydia of the condition of their earlier agreement. Detective Wolf and his officers arrive but are frozen in place by Beetleguese just before Dolores appears to exact her revenge. Using the Handbook of the Dead, Astrid summons a sandworm which devours Dolores and Rory.Astrid then reveals that the process by which Beetleguese brought Lydia into the Netherworld was illegal, making their wedding contract void. Lydia banishes Beetleguese back to the world of the dead, watching as he blows up like a balloon and explodes. Wolf and his men unfreeze and, after Lydia and Astrid express their love for her, escort Delia to the Netherworld where she reunites with Charles on the Soul Train.A little while later, Lydia films the last segment of her talk show before retiring the series in a bid to spend more time with Astrid. The pair travel to Transylvania and to Dracula's castle, where Astrid develops a crush on an employee there named Vlad. The two later get married. Lydia, however, still has nightmares about Beetleguese; one of them of Astrid giving birth to his child, causing Lydia to wake up startled.

Storyline
