Sean Byrne is a gifted Australian filmmaker specializing in stylish horror movies, bursting onto the scene with his galvanizing debut as director/writer of the highly acclaimed The Loved Ones (2009), starring Xavier Samuel, Robin McLeavy, Victoria Thaine and Jessica McNamee, and released in the U.S. by Paramount Pictures/Insurge Pictures after premiering at the Toronto Film Festival’s Midnight Madness section, where it won the coveted People’s Choice Award.

Byrne was director/writer of his first American horror movie, The Devil’s Candy (2017), starring Ethan Embry, Shiri Appleby, Kiara Glasco, Pruitt Taylor Vince, and Tony Amendola, and which premiered at the Toronto Film Festival before a theatrical release by IFC Midnight.

Byrne returned to the big screen as director only of the Australian Gold Coast-set survival horror movie, Dangerous Animals (2025), starring Hassie Harrison, Josh Heuston, Rob Carlton and Jai Courtney, released wide by the Independent Film Company (formerly IFC) after premiering in Directors’ Fortnight at the Cannes Film Festival.

Personal life

Sean Byrne was born and raised in Hobart in the Australian province of Tasmania by his parents. Byrne earned a degree in law, and then attended the Australian Film TV & Radio School, where he earned a Masters in filmmaking.
