Gorō Taniguchi (birthname: Taniguchi Gorō) is among the most highly regarded Japanese animation directors at Bandai Namco Filmworks, Inc., also known as Sunrise. While working as a director, assistant director, storyboard artist, and creative producer on several anime TV series, including After War Gundam X (1996), Code Geass (2006-2008), and Planetes (2003-2004), he branched out into feature filmmaking as the director of Jungle Emperor: The Brave Can Change the Future (2009) (also known as Kimba the White Lion).

It was another eight years until Taniguchi returned to features with the first feature version of the Code Geass series titled Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion I—Initiation (2017). Taniguchi continued with a steady output of Code Geass films, including the second and third parts of the three-part epic: Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion II—Transgression (2017) and Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion—Emperor (2018). Taniguchi also directed the sequel to the three-part film Code Geass: Lelouch of the Re;surrection (2019), with the voices of Jun Fukuyama, Yukana, Takahiro Sakurai, and Ami Koshimizu. Gorō Taniguchi was the director and chief storyboard artist for the fifteen feature of the One Piece film series, One Piece Film: Red (2022), produced by Toei Animation (the animation arm of Toei Studios) and based on Eiichiro Oda’s manga.

Prior to the U.S. premiere on November 4, 2022, One Piece Film: Red was already one of the highest-grossing Japanese films on record and the top-grossing Japanese film of 2022. Taniguchi created a multi-media project for both Fuji TV (as a TV developer Square Enix (as a game), and Polygon Pictures (as a feature): Eiga Estab Life: Revengers’ Road (2023), with Akira Ishida, Ayumu Murase, and Soma Saito as voices.
