Big Shug is a founding member of the rap group Gang Starr with Guru (Keith Elam). He was incarcerated before the group scored its debut album, but rejoined The Gang Starr Foundation and appears on 1994's album Hard to Earn and each subsequent Gang Starr album. Shug also appears on several of Guru's Jazzmatazz album series. Shug released several albums under his own name, frequently collaborating with Gang Starr DJ and producer DJ Premier (Chris Martin).
