Alex Scharfman is a director/producer/screenwriter who directed, wrote, and/or produced several short films from 2010 to 2018. Scharfman stepped up to the three roles of director, writer and producer of a feature movie with the horror-comedy, Death of a Unicorn (2025), starring Paul Rudd, Jenna Ortega, Will Poulter, Téa Leoni and Richard E. Grant, premiering at the South by Southwest Film Festival before a wide release by A24.

Scharfman has been a producer, associate producer, line producer, or executive producer for a range of features by American indie/art movie filmmakers. Including filmmaker Ira Sachs’ fine drama, Keep the Lights On (2012). Director/writer Michael A. Nickles’s horror movie, Playback (2012).

Director/writer Zachary Wigon’s romantic thriller, The Heart Machine (2014). The Adam Rapp-directed comedy, Loitering with Intent (2014). Director/writer Stewart Thorndike’s psychological drama, Lyle (2014), starring Gary Hoffmann. Director/writer Ingrid Jungermann’s comedy, Women Who Kill (2016). Director/writer Tayarisha Poe’s Sundance festival hit, Selah and the Spades (2019). Co-directors/writers Bridget Savage Cole’s and Danielle Krudy’s dark crime comedy, Blow the Man Down (2019), premieres at the Tribeca Film Festival. Director/writer Andrew Semans’s thriller, Resurrection (2022), starring Rebecca Hall and Tim Roth. And co-directors/writers Bridget Savage Cole’s and Danielle Krudy’s horror movie backed in part by Jason Blum’s Blumhouse, House of Spoils (2024), streaming on Amazon Prime.

Personal life

Alex Scharfman was born and raised in the U.S. by his parents. Scharfman attended Cornell University, graduating with a BA degree in Creative Writing. Scharfman then attended New York University, earning a Masters in Business Administration and a Master’s of Fine Arts in Film.
