Alex Kendrick (birthname: Alexander Kendrick) began his career as a Christian evangelical-themed filmmaker while serving as a minister in Albany, Georgia, with the drama Flywheel (2003), for which Kendrick was director/writer/producer/editor/cinematographer/composer and was also in the cast and was released regionally in the South via Carmike Cinemas.

Kendrick’s second feature as director/writer/producer/editor/composer/actor was the sports drama, Facing the Giants (2006), grossing a strong $10 million for distributor Samuel Goldwyn Films/Destination Films. Kendrick’s third Christian feature was Fireproof (2008), on which he was director/writer/producer/editor/actor with cast mates Kirk Cameron and Erin Bethea, and which grossed a notable $33 million for co-distributors Samuel Goldwyn Films/Affirm Films despite very negative reviews.

Kendrick continued his Christian filmmaking success as director/writer/editor/actor with the crime drama, Courageous (2011), released to a solid $35.7 million returns via Sony Pictures Releasing’s Provident Films unit (attached to Sony’s Christian music-based Provident Entertainment) and marked the final movie produced by Kendrick’s Sherwood Pictures.

Alex Kendrick returned to filmmaking after acting in two movies (The Lost Medallion: The Adventures of Billy Stone in 2013 and TriStar Pictures’ faith-based comedy, Moms’ Night Out in 2014, with Sarah Drew, Sean Astin, Patricia Heaton, and Trace Adkins) as director/writer/editor/actor in War Room (2015), with Priscilla Shirer and produced by Sony Pictures’ subsidiaries TriStar Pictures/Provident Films/Affirm Films with Kendrick’s new production company, Kendricks Brothers, and which grossed $74 million globally.

Kendrick served as film editor of writer/director Carey Scott’s Christian drama, Faith of Our Fathers (2015), and as writer/executive producer/actor on Like Arrows (2018), and then returned to directing (as well as writing, editing, and acting) with Overcomer (2019), a sports-themed Christian drama with Shirer and earning $38 million (against $8 million costs) for Sony Pictures Releasing.

Kendrick appeared as himself in the Kendrick Brothers-produced Christian documentary, Show Me the Father (2021), and then Kendrick was the writer/editor/actor in the Christian anti-abortion drama, Lifemark (2022), starring Kirk Cameron and the first Kendrick Brothers movie released by a company other than Sony Pictures (Fathom Events). Kendrick was the director/writer of The Forge (2024), conceived as a spin-off of Kendrick’s War Room, and co-starring Priscilla Shirer, and released by Sony Pictures Releasing and produced via Affirm Films/Provident Films/Kendrick Brothers.

Personal life

Alex Kendrick was born in Athens, Georgia, and was raised in Smyrna, Georgia, by his parents Larry and Rhonwyn. Kendrick has two brothers, Shannon and Stephen, who are Kendrick’s co-screenwriters. Kendrick graduated from Kennesaw State University with a BA degree in Communications. Kendrick was ordained as a minister after attending the New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary, and became associate pastor at Sherwood Baptist Church in Albany, Georgia in 1999, and remained in that post until 2014. Kendrick is married to Christina Kendrick; the couple has six children. Kendrick’s height is 6’ 2”. Kendrick’s estimated net worth is $8 million.
